Scientists Use Light To Eliminate Existing Defects In Solar Cells

- Oct 09, 2017 -

Over the past 10 years, the price of solar panels has greatly declined due to manufacturing and installation advances. Researchers are now trying to develop a high cost-effective solar panels that use low-cost solar cells.

A new research finding released on the journal ”Joule” shows that the light and water can contribute to the improvement on solar cell’s efficiency. Perovskite is considered a major event in the solar industry.

Although the price of solar panels becomes more proper, the panels need to be much cheaper if we want to overcome the climate change. The cost of solar panels is expected to be as low as a bucket of paint, and perovskite is liable to make the expectation come true.

For the traditional solar cells, when the sun shines on the panel, the light particles will release excess electrons from the silicon molecules. These electrons flow through the metal inner layer of the cell and then connect to the families and businesses that need electricity by wires. The problem with silicon is that it requires flawless power generation, since tiny imperfections will transfer electrons. In order to purify silicon, the manufacturer heats the material to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, which consumes a lot of energy and economic costs.
